And SM3, how do you know he was even trying? If he's like me, I don't downshift to the lowest possible gear everytime to pass someone. And you were apparently primed and ready to race while he was simply passing someone. There's another M3 in my area that is driven by a 58 year old woman. She doesn't exactly race allcomers, and I wouldn't make the assumption that all M3 drivers feel the need to prove something to you. I typically don't even waste my gas on the local ricers, and when I do it's no contest.

I have guys in civics pull up to me at stop lights saying that they almost had me. True example from a week ago

I stop at a light in town about half a mile from the previous light.

Civic: I almost pulled on you at the light
Me: What?
Civic: I've got a couple mods but I thought M3's were faster.
Me: I'm driving normal, not going above 3.5k, and I didn't even see you.
His passenger starts laughing at him and they make a right turn on red.
Exacly the way I think!!

Trust me he was trying, we didnt just get up to 120-130. Plus before I had all my mods my friend had an e46 M3 and I would pull on him up until the end of 4th he would then begin to inch up on me. Now I have done plenty more, I even talked to the guy after and he was impresed, the first thing he asked me was thats modded isnt it....

Thats awesome SM3! I've been trying to find one to race lately.... hopefully once I get my track pipes and headers I be somewhere near where you at.

By the way, get your ride dynoed, your last dyno with AA that you posted was very impressive, I like to see what numbers you making now...

What are yall doubting SM3's capability? Shit i ran door to door with my frien'ds SMG from 50-120 and that was before i did my fuel system.. he's got cams, etc. I'm sure he pulled that E46.. blah, E46 M3's are no fun anyway.

I won't turn this thread into a digression regarding a pointless debate, but yes that's how i feel. Too heavy, too soft, too numb, too disconnected-- call me a purist, but it just doesn't instill the confidence i'm looking for (that i find very much in an E30 M3 as well as the E36 M3, but not at all in the E46 M3). And i know from experience not from speculation. That's not to say they don't have great attributes, such as the motor, gearbox, differential and brakes (though when is BMW gonna warm up to aluminum multi-piston calipers anyway?), but the chassis is too numb/heavy for me.

Anyway, SM3's car is sick, and wow just looking at your torque curve makes me realize how sad mine is. I really need to install that new AA software-- actually i need to just go down there and have them tune it! How many hours did it take to dial yours in? What's the typical cost for this at AA?

Oh cmon is there a week lane or something? You need just 1 and not 200 in order to make a dyno + i always thought that ppl who mod their cars usually make dyno's pretty often in order to see their hp gains.

Alex might not be willing to get in the debate, but hell things are slow at work this morning so why not.....

As far as Alex's run at the SMG from 50 to 120, I can attest to it because I was the one driving the e46, and as far as door to door, I would actually give Alex the edge because just at the end I felt he was starting to pull, and that was before he worked a few of the issues out of his car and I have no doubt if we did it again he would pull the SMG. But we can't run them again because the e46 was replaced with a 1992 911 Turbo (BTW the e46 and now the 911 are my fathers cars, he just let me borrow it while my 951 was down, also to point it out I am not some 16 year old kid with no driving experience).

The power of the e46 M3 is not as impressive as I was hoping for but it at least is entertaining, what gets me about the car though is the feel. It felt less like a sports car than a e39 525 w/ sport suspension, ok that might be pushing it but chassis is less than inspiring. Every time you place it into a corner you can feel the weight of the car move around, but what exactly the tires are doing with a road is a bit of a mystery. Alex and myself had the e46 on a long mountain drive just north of winston salem and got the opportunity to really drive the pig, and before that drive I was undecided as to how I felt about it, after the drive I was on a quest to get it out of the family. I will say it again, the e46 M3 is not a sportscar, it is a sporty car, or grand tourer. Jump from it to my 951, my fathers 911, alex's M3, or Robs ITR and you will notice in all the other cars what the M is lacking, Feel.....
