Given two decent drivers, the two are very close, but I would have to give the nod to the E46 M3 unless the SC is hitting in over 300 whp - and the nod definitely goes to the E46 if they 1. Run in hot weather or 2. Run multiple times as the heatsoak starts to hamper the SC. Of course, that's just my opinion from what I have seen.

What kind of SC is it? What comes with the "kit" for $2800? How many miles on the SC? Considering that a new Dinan kit back in the day was $12,000 or so installed, it could be a decent deal. Who is going to do the software? It's critical stuff.

You should find out about what kind of SC, specifically what kit, and how many miles are on the thing. I don't know very much about FI either, but I am learning, and I do know that the software is critical to the point where it can blow your engine if it starts running too lean. I would suggest contacting Dinan once you have identified the kit and they would know the necessary software.

If it's the same SC that I saw for sale...it's a Powerdyne - known to be problematic based on feedback from others on this site and roadfly.com. Take a look for yourself. I'm looking at the new AA SC...comes with intercooler and oil cooler. ![]()

As for the powerdyne units being problematic, i think you'll find your fair share of people who would beg to differ with that assessment. Obviously you'd want to find a Vortech V2-SQ, but those are prolly harder to find. If you did go with the used "kit" you'd absolutely need to the SC chip from Dinan. Drive the car without that and 1. it won't run right at all, 2. you'd be risking major engine damage... Hit the FI forums here and on bf.c, there's tons of info out there. You definitely want to be more informed before buying a used kit, or any kit for that matter. As for your initial inquiry, in a straight line I suppose it would be very close and come down to driver skill more than anything....but in the words of a BMW/Dinan Dealer, a blown e36 "runs circles around" the e46 everywhere else.... Those aren't my words, simply one knowledable person's opinion. |

The reason the E46 would win has little to do w/power. It is geared much more aggressively than the E36. Put a meaner rear end on the E36 and it will win that race.
