e46 m3 exhaust whine??!!

What is it with the e46 m3's. At first, I thought one of my friends just had something wrong with his exhaust, maybe something knocked loose. And when I drove a diff. e46 m3 I couldnt hear it from inside, just the wonderful noise of the engine.. BUT the exhauts sound LIKE CRAP!!! I have another friend who has an alpine white e46 m3 and he put a supersprint exhaust on it, which sounds like the same exhaust BUT LOUDER. It almost sounds like theres something in the pipes before the muffler that makes it sound like that? Maybe its the cats? Would a straight pipe eliminate that terrible rattling noise it produces when you gun it? I talked to a good friend of mine going to bmw mechanics school and he said he couldnt really answer that question, but we agreed that m3 owners probably grow to love the sound, almost like its a melody to their ears. Well, to my ears it sounds like crap, why the hell doesnt it sound even remotely as deep and nice as the e36 w/ aftermarket exhaust? I just dont know where this hollow, rattling noise is coming from, and on two different m3's?

i think the best word for it is "raspy". its just what the e46 m3's sound like.

Yea I don't like it either, but it's not so bad.

i think it's the resonator that does that.

i love the sound on ours, but it could be throatier. we have a unique sound.

The noise comes from the headers...chnage those and add in an aftermarket exhaust and your golden.
