| Well I say its a tin can from experience and so do a few of my E46M3 owners friends...but who cares man u drive a E46M3! tin can exhaust note or not its a bloody awesome car and most people would do anything to drive one, let alone own one... E39M5 V8 ROAR I miss the throaty roar of a V8...I've only driven and heard a stock M5 sounds mean I wonder what a worked one would sound like. I only have the M5 from Gumball to drool on. |

This logic is familiar...a six (or is he seven now?) year old boy I know uses it. Please do not call those who disagree with you children when you use illogical reasoning that would baffle a ten year old. Thank you. Have a nice day. |

E46///M3's are not that rare and I am sure many people have heard an E46///M3's exhaust note before chiming in. I for one have heard many E46///M3's exhausts and believe I can comment on my opinion regardless of my age. And no I am not a kid, although I wish I was!!!! and if I was, the E46///M3's stock exhaust would still sound tinny and hollow. I agree with you that the exhaust note on the E46///M3 is like no other car. Let me clearly state my position this time. As an adult, I like to declare that in my opinion the stock E46///M3 sounds like shit when not WOT. IMHO, If I bought a US$55K car w/ 8K rpm limit and 100hp/liter output, I would expect a better sounding exhaust. |

| True... But listen to a straight flow system with a euro/supersprint header on an E46 m3... and you'll change your opinion. Listen to mcmillins S54, and PTG's I am sure will sound amazing. Stock though they are unique but a bit raspy with emissions cat/headers. A straight pipe system would just sound MEAN though. |

| Sounds like someone is belching into a tin can. The rumble of the stock E36 M3 is KEY.....the best exhaust note comes from the S4. I don't hate the sounds, it is just a different note than I like. DL the Ansa file on my sig - that's what I like. Last edited by ///Samson : 11-14-2002 at 02:34 PM. |

| And no, I am not a follower of sorts like Mr. Original states. I have driven them, I have followed them - they sound like TIN shaking around. If you love it, GOOD, I am happy for you. Best wishes. Last edited by ///Samson : 11-14-2002 at 02:30 PM. |

| The age of the car is also key. The sound off the lot is completely different than when you reach 10,000 miles. Off the lot, none of the exhaust system is worn in. The tinny sound comes from the Vanos system and the solid lifters, not an exhaust problem. But choosing the right system from the cats back can get rid of almost all the "tin." I forgot the exact components used, but one guy got his E46 to sound almost exactly like a M5. I think he designed and welded the system himself, with a healthy knowledge of resonance and acoustics. Think he's an aerospace engineer.

| no sir i do not like it AT ALL...in fact, i hated it with a passion i stood outside while my ex drove the car down the road and it sounded badass coming TOWARDS me...the motor has an AWESOME roar.....when he passed me was when i wanted to bend over and hurl VERY tinny...worse than a weedwacker....it idled too quietly for my taste. i have the AA exhaust and i love it.....sounds too raspy when it's cold, but once warmed up sounds great!!!!

| Re: E46 M3 Exhaust Sound Quote:
After hearing it in real life and listening to tens of videos, when pressed, it sounds, to my ear, like the small displacement dirt bikes I use to ride as a kid. I think it does the car a great disservice to be bound to such an unsavory exhaust note--it has no "song". For comparison, I find the E36 M3 exhaust note nearly perfect. Oh, I have an .mp3 of a factory M5 and it sounds good. And for those that write that the exhaust note is unique-thus-good, that doesn't cut it. Just being unique doesn't make it good. Hell, the fart exhausts on Civics were unique for a time but it still sounded like a long drawn-out fart. |
