that clip sounds like a BMW but its not very throaty sounding. I had a mozart on my car and it sounded more throaty.

BTW, how's your new engine doing? How many miles?

I think when my car was stock it sounded better than the E46 from the outside at least. From the inside you can't really hear the exhaust on either car.... I dunno the 2stroke chainsaw noise at high rpm just sounds weird coming from a car with the M3s looks.... Aftermarket exhaust would be my first mod if I had a E46 M3.

New engines working great. I've got 5000 miles on the new one and it actually feels stronger than the old one. Also, the dealership where the tech drove it to oblivion has become very helpful all of a sudden. I went in complaining about the left headlight beam not looking right and they immediately order an entirely new assembly, like $1000+ part. So life's been good since the failure. The warranty is still good for another 37,000 miles and 2 years, so I'll be doing more autocrossing and track days from now on. Although, on the other hand, I might just get an E30 and track it. BTW thanks for asking about the car. They replaced the engine in 2 and a half days so it wasn't that bad. They started the swap on a Monday morning. Got it back by Wednesday afternoon. If it's that easy, I wouldn't mind getting a new engine every 10,000 miles. Especially if they issue the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty that's been bouncing around.

well thats probably an ignorant statement, no offence, but well you are going to get that quote "ricey" sound when you get a high revving engine, its just natural the higher rpm the higher the exhaust note, not to mention its pushing 8grand on the tach, meaning if its not an v8 its going to sound "ricey" its just the physics in it, ok well i made the dumb version and could sound more intelligent, but dont have the vocabulary so dont waste ur time on calling me ignorant cause i will only laugh.

although i would have to say yes unique they both are, i love the throaty sound of the M5, and i like the nice and smooth sound to it, its not loud and its wierd it gets quiter the higher you go. although again physics says so, but i just love the AA first thing im going to do is slap down an AA exhaust on it when mine comes in, but first i needa come up with mad cash for the downpayment, dont want an 57K loan, lets see almost in guys :-) ill give an true opnion when my E46 M3 comes in in a few weeks.

the stock m3 exhaust is awesome. Like no other car. I have had nothing but good compliments. Its hard to get honest opinions on a message board, especially with all these impressionable kids. One guy says the exhaust sounds like a tin can and all the children follow.

I would say with euro/supersprint headers and straight pipes to a custom muffler sound just amazing on the E46 m3. Wait until you hear the sound of PTG's I6 speed challenge cars being rnu this coming season, they are going to sound SCHWEEEEET!

E46 M3: From outside, it kinda sounds like a mix between a f*cked up chainsaw and a Ferrari F-355 in my opinion. However, the car has more of a growl when your driving it, or are a passenger since your closer to the engine.

E39 M5: One of the classiest, sounds I have heard on a stock car. From outside, its deep, and has a growl to it unlike the e46 M3. I guess thats what one can expect from 400hp

At low RPM's, the E46 M3 sounds like an angry hornets nest.

I like how it sounds at higher RPM's.

the stock e39 m5 exhaust sounds fine, of course it could always use a little work by adding an aftermarket exhaust.

i heard tri-flow on an e39 m5 once, and i got to say, that thing sounds like shit. it's so damn annoyingly loud, i can just imagine the droning in the cabin.
