| I think a differentiation needs to be made. The "tinny" noise most of you mention is an engine sound not an exhaust sound. At WOT, the sound is coming from the engine bay. In the E46 M3's case the muffler lives up to it's name. My friend and I took off my muffler one day when we were bored and DAMN! The thing straight off the cats has on helluva sound. Thoatier that a friend's Mustang GT without mufflers and at WOT it sounds exactly like M3 race car. I had a headache after driving for two hours, a good thing. We were like, "how can harley driver's stand this?" Aftermarket exhausts just take the "muffler" muffle out of the exhaust. And nothing I have heard yet beats Eisenmann race muffler with Supersprint connecting pipe. Together they almost eliminate the "tinny" sound leaving nothing but a throaty, sweet symphony.

| I'm definitly not into the stock E46 M3 exhaust very "tinny" sounding. I had an encounter with one and it just didn't have the bark to its bite.

| I have talk to people who ride Harley's and asked why they don't get annoyed with the sound. They said they can't hear it.

| WOT= Wide Open Throttle. Anyway i dont' like the sound either...i was with my roommate goign to the liquer store and we had an m3 buzz by on the highway and he thought there was something wrong with the exhaust. THat would be the first mod i would do to my e46 m3 ![]()

| I've got a sound clip from the day when my friend and I were bored so we took off the muffler. Sorry about the low quality, there's a lot more bass than you can hear. My E46 M3 without a muffler The clip was taken from inside the car with the windows open. It's a onramp to the interstate. Unfortunately my run was interrupted by traffic so I had to back off...otherwise I would have had a much longer clip. We drowned out the sound of a R1 at a stoplight. From the outside it was ridiculously loud and very illegal in the noise dept. I'd like to get a sound clip of the engine without the cats but they're welded to the headers on the M3. Many resonance frequencies can be felt in the interior while driving. For instance, coasting on the interstate at around 2200rpm you find the resonance frequency of the pennies in the ashtray.

| i dont think its that bad, but then again i dont really have experience with aftermarket exhausts tones. ive heard the tubi exhaust, but i wasnt impressed. at wot with the stock, i like it, but i could use something throatier and lower. i saw the vids from www.eisenhaus.com and damn they sound awesome. i wanna hear one in person. i asked my dad if he ever wants to get a new exhaust, and he was like, "how could u mess with a car that is already perfect. the new exhaust wont do much except make it look and sound better." i was like,"......exactly." ![]()

| True, I will say that without a muffler at all there was a noticeable drop in torque. Probably had more hp though. That's typically the trade off when removing backpressure past optimal levels. (Like the levels BMW M picked for the stock muffler)
