i thought there were numerous problems about the engine failure on 01 and 02 models..you might want to check on that.

I don't know man, I was wondering the same thing. The new car is of course the fastest of the M3's. The E30 is the best handling, mainly because the engine is balanced perfect for the suspension, and the car isn't too powerful. The E36's were the sketchiest as far as break point goes. Still a great handling car, you just don't feel as confident driving it hard, and powering out of turns. Styling wise, all the M3's look bad ass, and the new car takes the baton and keeps rolling. The silver E46 in Mischief is one of the sexiest cars I've seen. For $48 grand, or so, there really isn't anything on the planet better. Faster, maybe. Better handling, and performance, possibly. Asthetically appealing, doubt it. My friends and I have discussed this in depth, and really comes down to an S4 or an M3, and since they're VW guys, and it's obvious where my loyalty is, the reviews are mixed, but even they ultimately agree the E46 M3 is the best of all, and definately worth the price tag. Keep in mind my car new was almost $40 g's. Oh and the CLK55, it's worthy, but way too expensive, and it's a Benz. I will never trust a Benz after thier CLKGTR program. Hellz no.

The most recent word on the late fall 01 engine failures is that BMW M found that at least one of the line boring machines that bore the bearing seats in the blocks was not re-programmed to accommodate the change in bearing inserts made in late October of 01. The result was an overly tight running clearence, and hence the 150-200 engine failures that resulted.

Engine failures outside of that window are few, and spotty, with no common thread to tie them together. So far there is but a single 02 production car reported with an engine failure. It's a 2/02 production car in Australia or New Zealand as I recall.

BMWNA's initial posture of blaming the failures on the owners (never wise) has given way to total cooperation and speedy replacement for those afflicted. There have also been reports of BMWNA coming forward to reimburse those that had paid all or part of the replacement cost themselves. Better late than never.

In any case, the engine failure saga seems to be in the final stages of being wrapped up. All thanks to Jason on the Roadfly E46 M3 forum for tracking and investigating the failures, and being 1st to reveal the pattern in the failures. Once again the net gets to the bottom of a problem before the manufacturer.
