E46 M3 blown engine

I've seen this happen at a BMW track day.

BMW recently changed the oil requirements for E46 M3s 10W30 (?) to 10W60 to stop the engines from blowing up. It's the same problem they had with the E39 M5 when it first came out in 1999.

Apparently, the E46 M3s have been dropping like flies in the US.

I'm still getting an E46 M3

Ouch...

Heartache!

Do you think bmw would replace the engine under warranty if they knew it had been racing?

It looks like these guys are up shifting- with the rev cut out is it possible at all to over rev? I can understand down shifting, but not up

I've missed 2nd a couple of times but that's not bad considering the only way i ever launch my car is at full power, every time! Just waiting for the clutch to go... and the tires too!

It's a known issue, even in SMG models where over revving is not permitted. BMW have been replacing the engines under warranty. They normally go around the 8,000 kms mark.

Last time I checked a M3 forum, there were 23 x S54 engines on back order from BMW NA.

It's just an oil issue. The S54 will be fine as long as the right oil is used

Unhappy Damnn...

But I guess that's what you risk when your pistons are moving at 23 metres per second

Oh well... i'm sure those owners still looked cool in their cars when their engines blew up!
