Spare Tire Setup

Anybody carry a spare tire?

I had my first flat today. Found it at lunch....

I don't carry a spare because the extra weight in the trunk just make the rear tires wear faster. I do have many of them at my house though...

You do get roadside assistance for life from BMW for any flat tires though.

Well, so far so good. I've purchased a tire from TireRack, a wheel from BMW, and a jack/lug wrench/chock combo from ebay.

I'll be getting the tire mounted up tomorrow and then into the car. Now I just have to figure out some kind of bag to store it all in.

I just can't stand tire slime...

Tire's all mounted and ready to go. Now just to find/make a bag of some sort to store the tire in. Then find a good place for the jack/lug wrench/chock.

Why dont you get Run Flat or Extra Load tires so you can make it back when you get a flat?

Run flat tires have a few disadvantages that I did not want.

They are typically higher in price than 'normal' tires.
The sidewall stiffness is MUCH higher than normal tires, resulting in a rough/choppy ride.
They typically are not available in compound tire types which I was/am interested in purchasing.

Well then why not just XL tires? They arent as stiff as runflats. The Extra Load (XL) versions of many of the tires that will work with your car...

Extra load sidewalls allow you to drive slowly without damage to your wheels should you get a flat, but they are not uncomfortable. I have tried both versions of the Potenzas and detected no ride difference... They are also within a few bucks of the non XL versions...

Yeah I saw that in my searching. They've been out of stock for months now.

I was able to put together my own package for less than their asking price as well.

I had seen people with a donut spare, not sure who was selling it, but it came with a cover, jack and etc.
