E46 M3 engine failure???

Im not hateing mom ///Mz, but Ive herd so much, I heard from the BMW dealer that am E46 Mz have a black box on the engine, so that if u blow the engine, they can c if its from how you have been driving it. This is 2 c if its covered under warranty. but yhea like I said im not hateing, just wanted to know what u all know.

The engine failures were do to a bearing problem. There was a recall/fix and all e46 M3's but 04's carry a 6 yr/100k oil lubed parts warranty.

The engines in question are the Nov 01 to March 02 builds. To cover their asses BMW extended the warrenty to all e46 M3s up to 04.

My M3 is one of the earliest ones. Production Feb 01. I have had it for 2 years and got it with 19K miles. Today it has over 55K. I have taken this car to the track and have driven it hard. No problems with the engine. Knowing its covered till 2007 or 100K makes owning this car a lot easier.

i don't know if any of u read the article, but in the march 2003 car and driver they reviewed their long term 2001 m3 and they said their car burned 14 quarts of oil!!!!!! now i know they prob drove the shit out of it and it did have 41k miles when they turned it in, but they had to add oil even when it was new and they said that they broke it in properly

The M3 is not supposed to burn any oil.. you may have to add a quart every so often, but 14 quarts in a year means something's wrong... unless you spent the whole year tracking it....

I don't know about the M3's but the XI's eat oil like it's going out of style, at least a quart every 3 months or so.
