330i vs 330d

Hi there.
Am considering getting an e46 330d.has anyone got any opinions on this engine.
Would love to go for the petrol one but new job with further to travel sways me in view of the diesel.
Rumour has it that with a few mode the diesel can be a mean bit of kit.does anyone know any truth in this and what would be involved.want the economy but also want the power.
Looking for either a white coupe or a touring just to be differant
Any advice would be great

I'd go for 330D with a simple re-flash it'll be a torque monster
