Idle "Hick-up" 1999 328i Please Help

Hey Guys,

I just purchased a 1999 328i with 103k. I noticed that when I start my car and let it warm up for 30+ seconds it starts to "hick-up" once every 20 secords or so. This only happens when the engine is cold. If I just drive for a few mins the problem seems to go away and does not happen anymore when the engine has warmed up. I have not let it idle like that for more than a few minutes and dont know if it will get worse or even stall out. I have never had this problem with any other of the 17 cars I have owned in the past. Any help would be great.

I have the same proble,m sometimes it stalls and sometimes it doesn't. I could never figure out what the problem was. Although one time I went to the dealer and had the ECU reprogramed to the latest software and the car acted fine for a few months but then it went back to normal. I just learn to live with it now.

Could be a few things.

I think it could be your knock sensors... retarding the engine timing; however it could be your VANOS even...

My car does it occasionally, but i don't think much of it - i moreso think it's a problem with engine being a bit cold and pumping more fuel to stop stalling.

Mine does the exact same on occasions. Ususally on a very cold morning. Some reasons could be:
- Coild packs: One or more may not work at full potential when cold
- Vanos as xceptor said
- Spark plugs
- Bad fuel

Im due for a 100K service so I will checking everything. I will get my injectors cleaned, coil packs checked and sparkies changed along with fule filtre and a diagnostics test running the car cold.

Could be a leak in the intake piping.

Yeah I haven't post for a pretty long time myself. I've moved from MA to TX. Where I'm at, it's difficult to get a good reception for internet access.

Oh I see, you lived in lynn or something if I remember? You had a 328 right?
