bimmer troubles :(

having some fun bimmer problems

pulled into circuit city sunday night and the bimmer started idling rough so I shut it off and thought nothing of it then when I came back out and started it again it was idling at around 500-600 rpms and felt like it was going to stall out but once I started moving it was alright till I was at idle again then it would act up, so I brought it over to my uncles and opened the hood and noticed a whirring sound and a clanking sound every few seconds. my uncle used his stethoscope to try to localize the sound but it was pretty hard to pinpoint, he said it might be the alternator so I looked it up on e46fanatics and the pieces of info I found seemed to match up but now that I have dropped it off at a mechanic he is getting error codes on oxygen sensors and #1 cylinder missfire. I hope I dont have both the alternator prob and coil prob at the same time

Does the noise get a bit louder when you cut the wheel?

reading your post, i assumed it was an o2 sensor right away.

pretty sure it has nothing to do with the power steering ( had it hooked up to the computer and the errors that come up so far are O2 sensors and cylinder #1 missfire )

My car was doing this. Ended up being the idler pully...ended up chewing up the output shaft.

mechanic replaced the idle control valve "still runs rough" cleaned things up a bit "still runs rough" he said o2 sensors are messed up (did not specify which ones) final outcome: car runs like total crap still idling at 500rpm almost stalling, and this loud clank sound is coming from under the hood

another update: mechanic hooked the computer up to the car and came up with around 8 codes then he changed the spark plugs and now he is getting 10+ codes wtf is going on here???? I will try to get a list of codes to post up

yeah I think its time to forget about these local bmw mechanics and just bring it to BPG, if this guy does not figure it out by mid next week its going there

Did yo ufigure out what it was? I'm betting it's your intake cam sensor, or possibly even the MAF. Definitely something intake related...

turned out to be the sensor and somehow the computer got screwed up, I ended up pulling the car out of the initial shop that had it and brought it elsewhere. the guy told me he thinks the prior mechanic might of messed something up
