Okay, so why do I want blue teeth?

Anyways, sorry for the terrible joke. What's the deal with this? Bluetooth is used for wireless connections right? I really don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing.

I'll drop a little info on Bluetooth. I work for Verizon Wireless. The way it works it that whatever numbers you program in your phone when you put the bluetooth phone into the car's cradle it will upload all the number and info into the car's computer so you can do voice dialing like in the 745 or scroll through all of your contacts in your car in the car's computer.

Do you really have to put the phone in a "cradle" to "upload" I thought the whole theory behind bluetooth was its wireless capability...doesn't it just (upload) connect when its in close proximty (if you have the bluetooth adapter installed that is)?

The way that it was described to me is that you put the phone into a slot (for a lack of a better word, cradle does not really work either) hit the little mouth button that is above the slot and the bluetooth computer that is mounted in the trunk syncs the phone and the car together. after that, i think the phone can be anywhere within the car and the car can dial the phone.

There is an article wither in a Bimmer Magazine that i have or a Roundel. I will look it up and get back to you.

Thanks for the info! I'm looking into hands free options because they are cracking down on cell phone use while driving here in New York (not to mention other states).

Exclamation Let me clarify...

And BTW, thanks for promoting my DIY site ;-)

There is absolutely NO need for anything cradle-like. The glory behind Bluetooth is that the phone can be in the trunk in your gym bag, on the floorboard, in your pocket, in the glovebox charging, etc.

Bluetooth is considered a WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) and runs on the 2.4ghz range. Therefore it is non line of sight.

See the videos at the bottom of my page to get an idea of how it works.

In addition to sync'ing your address book, it also allows you to talk to your car, and it talks back. You can give Nav directions, ask it to record up to 5 minute memos, and tell it to dial numbers. The voice recognition is amazing.

Any questions please let me know. My e-mail link is on my site. If anyone is in Texas or surrounding areas and needs help with their install I'll be happy to help.

Welcome

That was the best writeup for the bluetooth that I could find. You did a great job on your site.
