It happens everywhere. All you do is disconnect the plug on the back of the odometer. You can also disconnect the speed sensor on the tranny on some cars so the guages are still functional.

wow thats pretty f'd up. but i guess if you just drove to work or knew how many miles you were driving you could get the oil changed and all that...scary to think about..maybe that "new used" car of yours had 20,000 more miles than you know about.

Its not uncommon but you can usually tell if the miles match by looking the car over real good. The most common is the side bolster on the seat. If its real worn and the car has low miles than thats a good indication to look it over a little more. Other things like the carpeting, shift knob, and on & on. In most cases if a car has low miles the interior will be in like new shape if the car has been taken care of. Then there are those people out there that forget that you have to clean the inside every once and awile to keep a car nice. If the car looks good and you like it dont let this thread scare you from it. Just look it over real good and dont rush into buying.

hint: OBD1 cars do not store the mileage in the ECU.

OBD2 cars do...

The miles still wont show up on the cluster. To get true miles the car has to go to the dealer.

It might sound hard to belive but that doesnt mean its not true. I was in Florida at Active Autowerkes over Chrismas and New Years... They had a 95 M3 down there... origional owner... with under 10K miles on it. It was insanely low, i think like 3500 or something? I might be off by a few thousand but i KNOW it wasnt much. I got to stick my head in the car and smell and it smelled like Brand New leather! Rediculous!

I have some friends that have two cars and their primary car just sits in the garage while they drive their secondary around. The primary's have ridiculously low mileage.

check the vin on carfax and look at the odometer fraud section. If that checks out, check the title, if it is salvaged then it probably does have that many miles on it cause it was sitting for a long time being fixed...... just my .02

M-gone, check the other linked thread, the kid who owns it already stated that it's a salvage title.
