I'd get the E39 M5 simply because its a better bargain right now. For less than a MSRP E46 M3 you can have a true legend on your hands with more room, more power, and a known reliable vehicle.

I say definetely go with the M5. it owns the road and its capable of alot more than what people say. i speak from experience....its not the fastest sedan in the world for nothing....test drive it and see for urself....however if u prefer an e46 m3...then get one..

Negative on your negative. If you did some research you would have found that the M3 and the M5 have very close performance #s. Car and driver had the M3 do the 1/4 in 13.4 while the M5 did is in 13.3 So for all intent and purpose both are as fast.

not really. If you are talking about new, they are not even close. If you are talkig about used. You will have a hard time finding a low mileage M5 for under $55k while you can find lots '01 M3 for about $45k. The problematic motor really killed the resale value of E46 M3s.

I've driven in both the M5 and M3 and the M5 is without a doubt what I'd take. The M5 is for ballers, if you're not a baller, get an M3. It seems that everyone has an M3 these days.

i agreee... m5 all the way... ITS FASTER!!!! not only that, it is for ballers, i agree 100%. Dont get me wrong, e46 m3 is one of the sweetest cars around, but you cant touch a 6spd e39 m5!!!!!! no contested. Ive seen them side by side, a carbon black e39 and an alpine white e46... two of the sweetest cars ive ever seen, but the m5 has SOOOO much more STUN appeal. That car is so noticeable on the streets its rediculous. And the sound of the v8 makes the e46 m3 with those CRAPPY ass headers PUT TO SHAME!!! dont get me wrong though, both are extremely phat cars.... my .02

The M5 is roomier the M3 weighs less. You'd have to race to see which one is faster. It's all what you want, because who is going to go 130 on a city street?

Those are crappy times and are inaccurate, what you need to do is find more than just waht Car & Driver tells you, it is common knowledge that the e46 M3 is slightly faster than the M5.

generally an e46 M3 will do 0-60 in around 4.7 and the quarter in 13.2.

generally the M5 will do 0-60 in about 4.8-4.9 and the quarter in 13.3.

Many sources have come out with times equal or very close to these. There is usually some variation due to different conditions but it is widely acknowledged that the e46 is slightly faster, This is not to mention the handling advantages the M3 has over the M5.

What I meant was a used M5 of course. A 2000/2001 M5 is less or about the same as a 2002/2003 new M3. Thats a whole lot more car for about the same price. I love my car but f I had the choice again I would go the used M5 route. All the taxes they throw on the M3 is ridiculous with a used car you don't have to mess with any of that.

OK, so let's go by your #s. Do they prove that the M3 is faster? really? I stand by my original statement. They both are just as fast and it's a driver's race between them. And yes, the M3 should handle better because of the weight advantage. But which one is more comfortable to scare 4 of your friends with?
