My M3 1/4 mile time

Took my 98 M3 5spd to a 1/4 mile track in Michigan this summer. It was my first car with a 5spd and first time on a track with the car and my best time of the night was a 14.8. My M3 was bone stock and I hit the rev limiter in first and didnt get a good launch. I have seen basically stock M3's run 14.1's. What am I doing wrong. What RPM should I launch at? Should I shift at the redline or before. All my other times that night ranged from 15.0-15.4 and I had problems shifting on most of those runs as well. Let me know any tips you guys have and your M3's 1/4 time. Thanks,

Jason

If you are stock shift at redline, and drag racing is all about the launch. If you want to see 14.0, then your 60' time better be 2.1xx or less. I cut sub-2 second 60' times, but then again, I am hard on my clutch. Wanna drag race, RAPE your clutch, and you will go fast!

Its sad about raping the clutch but SCHO is right. Usually when I go hard on my launches, my 60ft times drop down about 0.1sec. I have never gotten 2.0flat. I avg. at 2.2.

It is sad, but the harder you are on it, the better your launch is. I cut a 1.98 60' time racing an SS and told myself to burn it up. I did and cut that on Kumho street tires. I need radials.

206, you probably get way more wheelspin than me with the turbo, just trying to control all that power..

When you guys are saying rape the clutch are talking about slipping it (riding it) out at high RPM to reduce wheel spin or are you talking about just dropping the clutch at a high rpm. Let me know. I went to Capital dragway in MD and saw two M3's running 14.1's. One at least appeared to be stock. Thanks,

Jason

Riding the clutch will allow you to launch at higher RPM to reduce wheelspin, but dropping the clutch is just as hard on other components of the drivetrain. Rear diff bolts have been snapped before. My guibo is destroyed as we speak.

So riding it or slipping it out will probably give me the best 60' times and only really destory the clutch fast? Thanks for all your help on this. I eventually want to get back to the track here in MD and try for a low 14. I want to get a low 14 before I put on any of the modz that I have on the way. thanks again,

Jason

That is the air intake. AA relocates it to the passenger side, to make way for turbo plumbing.

More than just "how" it's actually a must. If you'll notice the exhaust manifold is on the passenger side, which is where the turbo goes (turbo works directly with exhaust). the intake side of the turbo is there, too, however (turbo is two fans--intake and exhaust---that's why they look like two 'snails')...this is where you need to put the air filter. And notice how you see the cone and then the intake piping sort of disappears---it's actaully going 'down' towards the exhaust manifold, where the whole turbo unit is connected.

Now, the way that filter (and intake side of the turbo) is eventually connected to the actual intake manifold/throttle body on the motor is by way of the intercooler and intercooler piping: from that passenger side, the air goes in the filter, through the compressor side of turbo, and then back forwards through the intercooler you see on the front of his car, and up to the intake on the driver's side...and then through the combustion chambers, and back out the exhaust manifold/turbo, and so on and so forth.

As far as actually 'how' they do it? It must have been a PITA for AA because it's a REALLY REALLY tight fit! and after you do a turbo there's hardly any room for anything else! .

You have to have a great launch for 1/4 mile. I don't drag race but I took my bone stock 95 M3 5-speed to the track about 3 months ago and I had these times:

14.122@98
14.091@100
14.188@99

My 60' was anywhere from 2.0xx to 2.1xx.

It's all about raping the clutch..........however, I only did it once.....no more 1/4 mile racing for me.

It was just to see how I would do.
