Finally got the M3 on the road...1st day, the engine over heats!!! Hey every one, i can finally say that I am driving an M3...unfortunately, my first day of driving it(i swear i was not driving it hard, i was trying to break it in), the engine overheated. My guess is with the combined heat of 95 degrees and the AC on full blast, my oil heat rose to 325 degrees!!! Has this ever happened to anyone else??? If so, tell me what happened, my car is at Westchester BMW getting serviced as I write this, but i am soo worried!!!! Thanks. -Dave

If the temp needle doesn't get into the red part(if the red light doesn't light up), there isn't anything wrong, but if in the red zone I would let it get checked immediately...

Thanks for the immediate responses, I couldn't tell you what the water temp read because i was soo freaked out, as soon as i saw the steam come from the engine i jumped out of my car. The oil light did get in the red, but only for about 1/8 of a mile. When i pulled it into BMW, i had a service guy come over immediately. By the time he came over steam started to come from the engine and when he popped the hood the antifreeze was boiling out of the radiator(i think?). I leaked a fair amount of antifreeze and he said the neck of the radiator is def shot, but my main concern is if i did any permanent damage or if i did something wrong that I can correct so this doesn't happen again. Once again, thanks for your responses! -Dave

there shouldn't be any damage to the engine if only the radiator neck cracked. BMW radiators are known to give out anytime after 70K. Change your thermostat and thermostat housing to aluminum for preventative maintenance as well.

| The only way to tell if the engine is damages is to have it thoroughly inspected. Compression , leak down, oil analysis, internal scope. 325 degrees for oil is insane. You had better change that oil yesterday. I would guess that it is severely cooked. If you had synthetic oil then you might fair better. But still change the oil. Even though it was a radiator that broke, it does not mean that there was no damage done to anything else. That is false hope. A radiator break is just what is needed to destroy an engine. Once coolant starts to leak out, hot spots will develop in the engine.
