Angry Proud new owner of a 2002 M3 and 200 miles later, problem.... :(

There is a rattle everytime I turn off the engine and every other time I shift. Sounds like a motor mount of something loose. It seems to only rattle when the engine/tranny has hard movements(ie, hard shifts, engine shutoff. Is this a common problem?

Everyone I think has this problem. It is nothing major just everytime you let into the gas it makes that noise. I went to the dealer and they said it really isn't no problem. No fix as far as my Colorado Dealer knows. They said it doesn't cause any problems.... So don't worry

Are you saying that the rattle at every shift and when your turning off the engine is normal or its a problem that BMW of America is just telling us to 'deal with it'? The sound is becoming apparent and louder the more I drive it. Its a rattle when I turn off the car and a knock at every other shift. Maybe we are talking about different things. I'll take it to the dealer tommorrow.

The rattle is the famous BMW "clunk" When shifting, it all depends on how you use the clutch... I can get my car to rattle or not rattle... as for the rattling when you turn the car off, I believe that's just the flywheel chatter or something... push the clutch in when you turn it off... should go away

And congrats on the car

The reason for the clunk is the dual-mass flywheel. They use these all other cars as well, but the don't hear the noise for a few reasons, M3 has less sound deading in the car to save weight, M3 has better throtle response so light touches change RPM's faster causing the flywheel tp flex back and forth, and the flywheel in M3 is of a stronger design than the other cars because they figure they would be driven harder. Sooo..until they come up with some mircale fix, live with it is the best answer. And for your info, SMG M3's will also do the same thing under certian conditions.

That rattle noise happens because the transmission fluid is thinner than most other cars so u get that rattle and clunk. Thats what makes the shifts silky smooth.
