| this is the closest thing to a diy besides the Bentley book that I know of...as long as you have mechanical skills you should be able to handle it. Pelican Technical Article: BMW Head Gasket Replacement

| FIRST TIMER, E36 M3 S52 HEAD REMOVAL = EASY DIY WELL I TACKLED IT TODAY IN 6 HRS. WITH THE HELP OF MY BENTLEY MANUAL AND FORUM POST. ANYWAY, THE WHOLE DEAL TURNED OUT TO BE ALOT EASIER THAN I THOUGHT. FOR CERTAIN IT WAS EASIER THAN DOING THE INTAKE M50 MANIFOLD SWAP.. ... LONG STORY LONGER, TURNS OUT THE HEAD GASKET BUSTED ABOUT A (5 MM) GAP ((BURNT(?) OUT OF THE GASKET BETWEEN CYLINDERS #5 AND #6. ONCE THE GASKET WAS REMOVED, THE CRACKS IN THE CYLINDER HEAD COULD BE SEEN. YEP, IT'S CRACKED. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! SOME OF THE VALVES WERE OBVIOUSLY BENT, AND THE PISTONS WERE VERY DIRTY BUT NO SCRATCHES OR DINGS. ....SO HERE'S THE NEXT MOVE, I REALLY HOPE TO HAVE SOME REPLIES ON THIS. EVEN IF IT'S SUGGESTIONS OR OPEN DISCUSSIONS ON "IF I WERE YOU... " TO GET MY HEART BEATING AGAIN- BECAUSE IT'S LYING ON THE WORKBENCH IN MY GARAGE RIGHT NOW. MY GOAL WHENEVER REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY PARTS ON MY M3, HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO UPGRADE TO FASTER BETTER STRONGER WHILE MAINTAINING OEM QUALITY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. .... DONE PROUDLY AND CORRECTLY, IT'S VERY METICULOUSLY BEEN PREPARED TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN SOME SIGNIFICANT POWER AND TORQUE {VIA: CAMS, SOFTWARE, INJECTORS, ETC.}. THE THINGS I'M NOT INTERESTED IN ARE SUPERCHARGERS OR TURBOS... ...ANYONE THAT'S BEEN INTO BMW PERFORMANCE OR RACING M3'S OR JUST KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT SOURCES TO GETTING THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK FIX PLEASE TYPE A REPLY. I AM IN THE MARKET TO PURCHASE A USED <75K MILES CYLINDER HEAD WITH VALVES AND ?? FOR MY '99 E36 M3 S52. THANK YOU |

| You could do a stage two head job from VAC motorsports upgraded springs valve job and up graded valves seals better power at the top end plus your rev limit can be pushed keeping your torque curve up longer with out valve floating |

| I've heard horror stories from Vac built heads....

| Like what , the guy that runs the machine shop is a 50 master machinist plus how can you screw up a head its Cake work, pull the valve easy, angle cut the with a machine that guides it reinstall the seals and valves, install new springs and retaners wich you can't do wrong or the springs would fly out. so I just don't see how you could mess up a head plus we build race engine, every thing from m10 to s54 and up, sold world wide plus we c&c hundreds or race parts so in the last 25 years Vac has bin around I guess there could have bin A screw up or two shit does happen.
