OBD1 VS. OBD11

What's up ya'll

Hey, can anyone help me with the difference in reliability and tuneability of the OBD1 versus the OBD11? I am looking at two M3's. One is a 95' Hellrot with 56k miles and claiming 283hp. The other is a 99' Estoril with 93,000 that is basically bone stock. The red is more expensive and they are both from original owners in phenominal shape. Can anyone help as to which one I should buy.

I have owned a 98 and 99 but never a 95. Please send some advice.

IMO I woulkd probably get the 99 mainly because I love that estoril blue color and 93k miles still isn't bad especially considering it's bone stock. i also like the fact it's bone stock because you can do what you want to it instead of what someone else has done to it. however 56k miles on a 95 is very low mileage which is good and if the things that are done to it are the same things you would do to it anyway that might be a good option for you. it's a tough call but either way you're getting a great car.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am all in on the Estoril Blue. That is my favorite color on an M3 and you hardly see any in San Diego. Thanks again for helping me in my decision.

in this case i think there are far more factors to be considered. in general, OBD1 and OBDII both have advantages... OBDII winning out for nearly all applications.

in the specific case of the E36 M3, the 95 specifically is an inferior product, and that is not related to its ECU style.

the car has weak valve retainers, is structurally deficient compared to the newer models, has archaic HVAC controls, tough leather and many many many aspects that were improved upon as the model run went on.

buy the newest M that you can.
