Speedometer/odometer not working.

I've replaced the speed sensor in the diff with a new one, my Peake tool doesn't show any codes, I swapped the cluster with another one, and even swapped out the OBC with another one I had just for sh*ts and giggles. But no matter what, the speedometer, trip meter, odometer, and OBC functions that require speed information (fuel economy, etc.) act like I'm sitting still. And I'd imagine that cruise control won't work this way, either.

Anything else I can check? Fuse 46 is "Speed control" but that one is fine.

Background: I swapped out the cluster for a European one, and it was working after that. It was after I pulled the cluster out to see why the oil temp gauge wasn't working that the speed-related functions stopped working, too. I wanted to test to make sure that pin 13 on the right connector (white, I think) was getting a signal from my oil temp sender. And I also added a contact to pin #5 in the far left (black) connector to eventually connect to the rear foglight switch, but that wire is unstripped and not connected to anything right now.

i suspect that you have an issue with the harness behind the gauge.

its very very sensitive.. i would carefully examine each pin, and make sure that the stripped wire is not a false ground.

did you make the appropriate changes to accept the oil temp gauge

I will try removing the unconnected wire/contact from pin 5, in case it's causing a false ground. I can also try removing pin 13 (for the oil temp gauge) as well, if that doesn't work.

What changes? It's the full Euro cluster, so I thought that I just needed to wire up the temp sender lead to pin 13. Is there something else I should have done?

Also...if it's a problem with the connector, would it still be affecting the OBC? I don't get any speed readings there, either.

Thanks for the suggestions!

i thought that there were a few other differences with the euro cluster...i know that the resistance sweep of the MPg gauge is way way different from the Oil temp gauge.. i am wondering if something is getting shorted out.

i think that the OBC gets info from the speedo, not directly from the diff.. thus a problem in the speedo would block info from reaching the OBC.

Yeah, the econometer uses a different pin for its information. It's funny to plug an oil temp gauge into a US cluster without other modificatios, because it looks like an oil temp gauge but the needle moves like an econometer. But the Euro cluster is wired (well, probably printed) differently to use pin 13 instead, AFAIK.

Hopefully you're right about this...would be the easiest (and cheapest) to fix, I think.

i consulted with a master and this was his response:

"Ask him if he had the ECU coded to the Euro Cluster. Not sure if it matters, but it may cause issues for US cars.

Also ask if he's done an 18 button OBC swap. A lot of wires have to be tapped off that harness and it's possible one is snapped or grounding out.

-Brett"

Thanks for checking. The ECU was not recoded, but the speedo on a US cluster doesn't work anymore, either, and the speedo used to work on this cluster, as well.

And my car came with the 18-button OBC, so a swap was not necessary

Just came in from the garage...not sure exactly what I did that fixed it, but I messed around with the connectors (pin 4 on the black connector seemed a bit out of place) and such, and now the speedometer and odometer work again!

Thanks for your help and advice!

Cool, did you get the oil temp gauge to work too? And did you transfer the mileage from your original cluster?

I left the oil temp gauge for another day when I feel like f*ing with it. I did transfer the mileage, though. Just moved the plug over, unlocked the cluster, and ran test #9 (I think)

Cool, nice work. I keep meaning to put my oil temp gauge in and wire it up, but haven't yet. Which Euro Cluster did you go with? Higher speedo? Higher RPM? Both?
Mine has a 170+ speedo and a 7500 redline.

^ That's nice.

Is that slim thing below the speedo and tack your boost controller or a radar detector? Looks like a good place for whatever it is.

Yep, radar detector and laser shifter. Passport SR7 with ZR3 shifters, works great. That's the control unit and the sensors are mounted front and rear of the car.

2 laser shifters in front, 1 in the rear, and 1 radar detector in front.

I still live in Texas, but have a shop in SD. I'm in central Texas, near Fort Hood. I plan to be living in SD by the end of the year though.
