| Replace the plugs every inspection 2. In the US that is about every 30K miles or about 48Km. I would check that there is no water in the soark plug recess, and that there is no water in the ECU compartment. (for you driver side, back of the engine compartment. As you have foung out, wadhing an engine can lead to bad things happening.

| I was too lazy to hunt back through this forum for the posting from a couple of months ago that talked about engine washing. A quick search of the web turned up this old posting from another forum. Brett Anderson Dec 3 2000, 3:00 am show options Newsgroups: alt.autos.bmw Date: 2000/12/03 Subject: Re: 94 E36 Waterlogged computer? Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse It's a very common problem. The DME sits in a box under the windshield. This box is not sealed from the plenum area where the wiper gear sits. This area is open to the elements and acts as a drain area for water from the windshield. There is a rubber drain in the bottom of this plenum that allows water to escape into the engine bay and onto the ground. This drain clogs with crap over the years, this, combined with the excessive amounts of water some automatic car washes use, causes the water level to rise faster than it drains. The result is that the water over flows into the box where the DME sits. The DME sits on the bottom of this box, the auto trans computer (EGS) sits in a bracket on top. If the car is a manual trans version, the DME can be relocated to the top as extra insurance against this happening. There is a service bulletin that describes the problem and says to clean the original drain and install a second one by punching a second hole in the firewall. It's fairly labour intensive, as the valve cover has to come off for clearance. If you're not already a member of the BMW CCA, go to www.bmwcca.org and join. It's worth a 20% or more discount at most dealers, which is considerable in this case. |
