540 engine swap in an e36

Hey guys - a friend has an opportunity to buy a 2001 540i engine for $1750 shipped to his house. He is thinking about dropping it in his '92 325i, but needs a little more information about cost and what all is involved in the switch. Can anyone give us a hand? This might be a nice DIY (some of it anyway) for us.
Thanks
Nick

Motor swaps usually end up costing 2x as much as you plan for.

your probably going to need a tranny to go with it...probaby a 540 6-speed or the auto...having a parts car would really help.

Def NOT a DIY! In the end it will NOT be worth the cost.

Usually with this type of thing, if you have to ask you shouldn't be trying it. If you know enough about the swap, the motors, the mechanics behind it you should know what you're getting yourself into.

So, what I'm saying is that you should stay away from it unless you're ready to unload your wallet to somebody else.

Would be much easier to swap a M3 95 in it. If it would only cost 1750$ i would already have one in my car.

The engine mounts won't fti, axles need the tranny from the 540 because the getrag won't handle this i'm pretty sure (and probably won't fit) need the wiring harness and all the stuff that's under the hood of a 540.

If you can made it for 1750, let me know

He can get the engine for $1800

Anyway, I told him he would need a lot of custom work to make it all fit. I agree that a 3.0 or a 3.2 would be a boat load easier. And that's something we could do ourselves.
Thanks for the replies
Nick

Your best bet is to take it to PTG and pay them 20k to hook it up right, or buy an old 528 to drop it in, or spend the rest of your life and life's savings on a DIY death trap. It will need custom (meaning one of a kind) steering, suspension, exhaust, brakes, etc. You'd get a much faster car for far cheaper by getting an AA Turbo M3 motor . . .

the most expensive part of installing that engine in that car would be the part where they have to fabricate a drive by wire throttle... BIG MONEY

Yep that would be Andreas (340V8), as far as i know from talking to him and having a close look at his car in person and even going for a ride in it, it really doesnt seen to be all that much involved as you would think. Then again dont take my word for it either, all i think you need is the engine, computer and harness, six speed or an auto from a 540, custom engine mounts, custom front sway bar, a set of heavy duty springs and a hell of alot of time and know how.

Anyhow the best bet would be to post a thread on the Australian forum as Aaron318iS said.

I can tell you one other thing, its fkn fast!

Too bad about this all. That's a great price for that engine imho.

you can talk to the turnermotorsport about it. they dropped an M5 engine in an E36. they have a used kit to make the swap easier for around $2000. Don't forget on top of all the stuff others mentioned, you'll also have to reinforce the subframe cause there's no way in hell your little E36 can handle that much torque!

Btw, I can vouch that engine swaps cost 2x what you expect
