318 cam upgrades...

are there any cam options for teh m42 motor? i want to pull some more power out of this engine, but i know how unresponsive it is to upgrades. I don't ahve teh $ for a DA 'charger, and i would also hate to lose the peakiness of the 4 banger... does schrick make cams for it?

just get someone to regrind your stock cam to wutever profile you want.

schrick make various cam grind's for the m42 engine...

but they are pretty expensive, probably set you back $1200 - 1300 over in the states (theyre $2500 here in australia)

if your going to upgrade you might as well get the race cams..
there are other grinds available but whats the point of paying the same price for something which gives lesser results?

not sure of the race cam specs, but you should be able to rev out closer 7200 rpm (the type of lifters used in our engines limit going any higher) with only a slightly more lumpy idle

but an m42 engine with cat-back exhaust, intake, chip, schrick race cams should push out close to 90kw (about 115hp?) at the rear wheels or so according to my workshop

they also said that regrinding is cheaper but there is only a certain spec/amount you can get them ground to?

The stock cams in a '91-'95 M42 are 240 intake and 240 exhaust. Schrick makes a 256/256 kit and a 256/252 kit. They also make race cams that over over 290 intake and exhaust.

Schnitzer makes a 2.1L Forged stroker kit for the M42, but the crank alone is $2100 and the 11:1 pistons to go with it will be about another $1000. You can only get about 185-190hp out of a street M42 with cams and compression, but you will have spent about $5000. The best thing to do is drop in a 2.5L M50 out of a 325i, or a 3.0L.

sorry, the car came with the throttlebody when i got it, so i cant really say how it was before. i know with all of my upgrades combined, its about as fast as my friends 93 325i auto, and the upper end power is just great, you can really feel the engine pull above 5k rpm. I think teh throttle body runs about $250 + like a $400 core charge or something...they say it all on Dinan's website. good luck man.

i got my cams reground for $200 by top end performance. i think ameri cam does it for them. thats a hell of a lot cheaper than anything else i've heard about. i got 11-1 JE pistons through them aswell ($625). and they know a lot about bmw's.

I have dinan intake, chip and throttle body on my M44, plus a supersprint exhaust. It runs pretty good and ive heard headers really help alot. Cant remember if HIOP or Supersprint makes them. good luck

Yeah, headers don't do squat on M42's and M44's. If you buy them you are just pissing your money into the wind. BMW uses the stock M42/44 exhaust manifold on its S42 300horsepower race motor.

Yeah schrick makes cams for the M42...only place i've seen them is on BMP design. http://www.bmpd.com/bmw/parts/catalog/engine_39.shtml ...goes for $800

oh, i didn't know there was that big of a loss from the transfer to the wheels, and also i thought those numbers were at the wheels.
