Now let me explain why both the Euro 3.0L and 3.2L are different from their US counterparts. First off they are both hand assembled motors. The US is not as it is machine assembled. The Euros have different compression ratios than their US siblings. Both the US 3.0L and 3.2L have a 10.5:1 compression ratio, Euro 3.0L has a 10.8:1 and the 3.2L has 11.3:1. Then the pistons are different because of the compression and the difference in valves from the Euro head. Then we have the difference in the bolts on the head and the way the heads mount. Okay and the rods are different rods to hold up to the higher revving Euro motor. But you are right in that the Euro stroke and bore is the same as the US motor but that is all they have in common.

And if you want the answer to your second question then think about why we didn't get the Euro motor. It never was because of emissions but cost.
Interesting. If the US M engines are machine assembled, where are they assembled? I was always under the impression that all M engines were hand built in Germany.
I would understand the use of different shaped/sized pistons to alter the compession ratio due to the fact a different cylinder head was used. I didnt realise that the conrods were different. I presume dimensionally they are identical, but of a lesser grade material and therefore most probably weight more.
If you look at my first post in this thread I state that the reason why you have the different motor is due to cost and not emissions. I was just curious as to changes within the block. But as I said before, the main changes were to the cylinder head. OK i missed the pistons and conrods. my mistake. As for the bolts - thats the cylinder head. Yeah they mount into the block, but they would still be considered part of the head.

I see you have a lightweight. What is the differences with that? Is it purely body panels/interior trim??

I shouldn't say they are machine assembled but they are more of an assembly line assembly process than the Euro motor. But they are still built in Germany. I guess I missed your first post about the cost and emissions. What I caught was that it did not make sense to produce two different motors. But that is what BMW did and cost is why we did not get a Euro version. Plus the Euro motor needs more maintenance and is more costly to maintain. BMW did not feel this is what the US wanted.

The LTW is a little more than body panels. They came with handpicked 3.0L US motors, GT dual pickup oil pan, GT rear spoiler with spacers, adjustable front splitter, xbrace, front strut tower bar, cloth interior, less sound deadening, no a/c, no radio, 3.23 diff, staggered wheels, stiffer suspension, aluminum doors and a few other goodies. Only 125 were made and they all came in white with the checkered flag stickers.

Wow I like the lightweight. Have you tried it against a "normal" M3? Hey a quick (stupid) question. Did the US get both the 3.0 and the 3.2L??

I have tried the car against other Ms and nothing compares. The car rocks them all. Never had anyone in another M3 compete.

The US did get both the 3.0L and 3.2 US motors. Both were rated at 240hp but the 3.2 was rated at 236ft lbs of torque vs the 225ft lbs of the 3.0.
