I'm new... I've read a lot in this forum regarding engine swap on their E36's and it really sound interesting...i owned E36 318is auto trans and thinking of swapping its engine to bigger and greater power. is it posible to do it?i'm thinking of 5 series engine conversion or an E36 M3 conversion or maybe even bigger engine,i.e 7series...please give guidelines and advise on this major project of mine...I really admire you guys out there working on your own swapping your engine car... Thanks ![]()

Might honestly be cheaper if you purchase an E36 M3, since your current platform right now is an automatic 318. I'm sure you could do it for cheaper than purchasing one but you would get all the body/suspension upgrades as well by just flat out purchasing an M3. A decently cheap swap that has a noticable difference would be possibly swapping a E36 325 engine. Just my opinion though.

My opinion would be go get a used M52 2.8 liter out of a 328 or a used S52 3.2 liter out of an 96+ M3 with the transmission and swap the car over to OBD-I. You will gain a lot of power by converting it back to OBD-I. By using a E36 based motor, it will pretty much bolt up. You can do great things with the M52 motor out of the 328 and they arent nearly as expensive as the S52.
