i have done an m3 swap into a 98 318ti. the car is a little monster. it was expensive for the customer. if you can do it yourself and have a decent donor its really not all that expensive. i mean, people say an m50 into an e30 is expensive and mine turn key (i had a single cam 4 cylinder before, so i had to replace everything from the radiator back to the differential with 6 cylinder stuff) was around 800-900 dollars out the door, engine and all. but i did all the work myself.

wrong so let me tell your wrong.... if intake and exhaust + chiping wont help than waht will...can you tell us? (i mean the easy modifications coz engine swap and turbo charging isn't hard to figure) with this mods i gain 40 hp out of my 323 and now it has 210hp instead of 170... it was way easy and cheap and i think 40 hp makes some difference dont you?...after this increase car is rolling 255kmh in 5th gear and become 325,328 killa !!!this are the basic mods for ANY car in a world so think before say something ok man...

The best thing to do is not overshoot the capabilities of your car. It may never beat out an m3 without serious engine reworking. (i.e a port and polish job, lightweight pistons and rods, titanium valves, etc.) so dont expect to be able to without some serious cash (unfortunately because it would be awesome to see a 318 kick an m3). Running a turbo will help but considering your mileage i would just go with a good intake and exhaust setup. Probly cat back because dropping $900 on headers doesnt make alot of sense unless you want to rebuild the whole engine. Face it..with those miles you may or may not have alot of life in the car so I would decide first if you want to stick with building this engine or swap it when this on dies for a bigger one...and go from there. Hope that helped.
