| Hey all! I was talkin to a guy about making my E36 1998 coupe lighter. He said he drilled holes in parts of the car you cant see and felt a massive gain. I checked out a few track day forums and there were a few guys saying the same sort of thing. Has anybody done this / know anything about it? Depz.

| If the car is used for racing only, there are an array of things you can do to make it lighter. If it is used as a daily commuter, most of them will be prohibitively expensive or can/may cause problems down the road. Drilling holes gives corrosion a place to start and can create places where water/dirt enter cavities. Places where you can loose weight - before you start drilling holes fan delete mod loose accessories like air conditioning, loose extra speakers and amps unneeded window cranks and motors get the lightest battery you can get that will start the car sun roof structure delete - absolutely replace glass sun roof with metal/fiberglass With fewer accessories, a lighter alternator Light wheels No spare tire lighter front seats no back seat carbon fiber or magnesium replacements for everything you can't do without. Then start thinking about shaving/etching parts and drilling holes. Don't remove anything that affects the way the air flows in the wheel wells or in the engine compartment. Or buy an M3 Lite, and you will have all this stuff done for you. Good luck finding one that is not trashed. |
