318i and 320i Fuel Consumption?

Hi i am new to this site and still contemplating on whether to get a 318i or 320i. Since my partner cant drive a manual therefore i am forced to get an automatic.

Just wondering are the fuel consumption for both similar or is there a huge difference in the consumption? I come from Australia so everything here is measured in KM and fuel prices here are insanely high.

Feedback from you guys would be greatly appreciated!

I've got a 94 318is (1.8ltr twin cam) and i can get between 500-700kms off a full tank of 98 octane though i do know of someone with a 97 318is and he only gets 400-500kms

I cant really work out how many k's/ltr unless someone can tell me how big my tank is.

The 320i and 325i use almost the same amount of petrol even though theres a 31kw and 55nm/t difference
My mate who has a 325i gets roughly 550-650k's per tank

personally i would get the 6cyl models and im spewing now that i didnt look for one.

Between 318i, 318is and 320i theres a couple of different engines

Pre 96:
318i - M40 (1.8ltr Single Cam) - 83kw - 4cyl (91 octane min)
318is - M44 (1.8ltr Twin Cam) - 103kw - 4cyl (Higher compression 95 octane min)
320i - M50 (2ltr Twin Cam) - 110kw - 6cyl ( 95 octane min)

After 96:
318i - M43 (1.8ltr Single Cam) - 85kw - 4cyl ( 91 octane min)
318is - M44 (1.9ltr Twin Cam) - 103kw - 4cyl ( 91 octane min)
320i - Not made 323i replaced it ( 2.5ltr Twin Cam) - 125kw ( 91 octane min)

Depending on your driving style the 320i will use a little more petrol but not alot, if your comparing the 318i and 320i petrol will be a bit more expensive as you will need to put a higher octane in.

It does state in the bmw handbook that you can use 91 octane petrol though and the only issue you will have is a bit less performance and kms / tank.

If you want a 4cyl your best off getting the 318is after 96 model, because they increased the engine to a 1.9ltr they were then able to reduce the compression therefore needing a lower octane petrol to perform.

If your looking for a 6cyl then a 323i would be the way to go you can use 91 octane and it has alot more power and torque

thanks for the info. today an add popped up for a 318is year 96. he priced it at 12.5k negotiable. what do you think? really im just after reliability and fuel efficiency here. dont know how low he will go but i offered 8k and he said its too low.

I will be going to view the car tomorrow. Seems like he put on m3 goodies or do they come stock?

a fully thrashed m3 goes for au$25k IF your lucky... yeah that price for a 318 is a lil high id try and get 2-3k off that price. Do a search on carsales.com.au and get the average price for the 318 off there for how ever many k's they've done. I'd go the 6cyl i have a manual 323i and its good thats the only word i can use to describe it right now.
