Sounds like the fuel injector has failed, is completely plugged, or is not getting a signal to open. I've never touched the injectors on an E36, so here are some general suggestions that are applicable to pretty much any car. If the wires reach, try swapping wires to the next fuel injector and see if the problem moves. Check for corrosion on the electrical connections. If the same cylinder still does not fire, that injector likely has to come out for cleaning/repair. Use a long stick or screwdriver as a stethoscope and see if you can hear it click open and shut while the car is running. Compare the sound to the other injectors. Pull it out and examine it. If it is dirty, pull them all and take/send them to a specialty shop for cleaning. Use new O-rings when you put them back in.

did you check the spark plug? I would tap the injector with a wrench/screwdriver. I highly doubt its going to work, but sometimes injectors get clogged. Keep in mind that once in a blue moon, you will find a injector soooo leaky that it will flood that cylinder to the point it wont fire. its gotta be something simple. Did you check if a good spark comes to that cylinder? Pull out the fuel rail LAST , if you have any doubts, and dont be afraid.

did you check to see if the number five coil is getting any juice? maybe the wire to the coil is bad. i dont know to much about ignition systems but if the plugs good and the coils good i would keep working your way back check the coil wires and what ever the wire plugs into the igniton module i think? do you have a multi-meter? check for proper voltage and resistance.

If the injector is getting a signal and is clicking open and shut, and it works in another cylinder, and the coil is getting a signal and it works on another cylinder, we are down to looking to see if there is a flat cam lobe on that cylinder.
