Are you sure your starters bad? i replaced my starter over a year ago and then a couple months ago it started messing up and when id try to start it the starter would just make one click then do nothing. Well i assumed it was the starter so i took it back where i got it done at cuz it was under warranty and it turned out to be just curroded +/- wires behind the firewall making it not get a good connection.

its not the fly wheel or ring gear. we also have a head gasket leak and that could also be a problem. basically...water going into the engine...?

I don't think a head gasket leak would cause what your explaining. Sound more like batter starter or connection somewhere. Check all your connections, espically to the battery I have seen corrision on the wires to the battery cause the same problem. Good Luck..

Check the starter relay. Check for corrosion and that it clicks when the igintion is turned. Give the relay a good hit if it doesn't click and try again.
Swap it out with a known good relay if there is another of the same kind in the fuse panel and if it all works sweet then buy a new one!

If the Relay, Connections and Wiring are all good then it's most probably the starter. Check everything don't assume it's ok or you'll be chasing your tail trying to find the cause.

Luke.
