Transmition Problem HELP needed

My car is an automatic (damn stupid people who invented it) but anyways its really weird acting. In parking my RPM goes freely but in Drive or Reverse it only goes to around 2000 and wont go any further. Also one of my engine lights turned on and i looked it up in manual and it means that the transmition gearbox or transmision management control has failed. My car wants to shut itself down like every now and then. Ill have to go to my bmw dealer and get this fixed but what are my alternatives? My friend paid $1000 for his repair and same symptoms, could i just make it manual, there was a thread about this somewhere in here?

Manual swaps, unless you do it yourself will cost you $.

If the automatic is really gone, then it might be cheaper to just get one from the wreckers and put it in.

dont know if its really gone but it wont shift and max RPM in Drive is around 2200, parking is alright. i believe its the trans management control, dunno what to do i need info on both options price time etc..

Best get a shop to diagnose transmission problems.

It could be in limp mode.

If it won't shift and go above 2000RPM it may be a computer issue.
