| thinking about buying an auto and converting to 6spd Im buying a new car (m3) and I found one but its automatic... now I figured it would be less likely for an automatic to be beat on... and i would have the opportunity to upgrade to a 6spd Id be doing all the work myself so labor isnt an issue [; now 2 questions 1. Is it really worth it? 2. would a clutch/pp/flywheel from a 5spd zf tranny fit a 6spd getarg? Regards, Tom |

| No. There are plenty of 5 speed cars out there. You would save yoursekf a lot of work just doing that. Yes the 6 speed will fit the clutch and flywheel, but since the 6 speed is longer you willneed to shorten and balance the drive shaft. Zionsville auto has a 6 speed conversion package tha includes a Z4 6 speed and all FACTORY PARTS. Give it a look.

| Zionsville has the FULL kit if I can get an automatic for cheaper then a manual (which is usualy the case... who wants a auto anyway) then Im saving a bit and I get the 6spd 4k isnt thatttt bad altho kinda high, but why would buying a 5spd be better then a auto? Im gonna spend that money anyway to get the 6spd and buying a 5spd isnt gonna give me the money I put into it... and it seems like the KIT has everythign to convert from auto to manual Tom |

| there are alot better things you can do for 4 grand then a tranny swap. Start with the right car and you don't have this issue, very little gain from the 6 speed tranny.

| I'm in the same boat as you are, I got my auto at a steal, and at the time I like the idea that it would be harder to break it as I save for the six speed, but in the end I miss the manual and find my left foot getting fidgity. Oh well.

| you know if your really into your car and like having projects to do and have some good cash flow, then by all means go for it. Then your going to be looking at a different rear end most likely a 2.93 cause with 6gears your gonna want the ability to have a higher top speed. BUT if I were you I'd take the m5 clutch, ltw flywheel, pp, and t/o bearing. If your doing a 6spd tranny swap what else lies in the future for your car? | If the auto has a factory LSD go for it! The 3.91 diff in the auto and the 6 spd are a perfect combination. MUCH improved acceleration over a 2.93 diff (manual), top speed over 160mph & good highway RPM/MPG.
