help with the ///M3 conv

Yo
We have a 1994 BMW M3 convertible.

The plastic rear window currently has an opaque appearance (not scratched), and we were wondering is there a product or process to get rid of this??? and to bring it back to it's former clearness.

Thanks all
mitchell

I thought they didn't make any M3's until '95...except those limited edition ones in Canada...

do a search on the web, there are companies that sell cleaner for plastic windows...i used to have a jeep and the magazines i got for it always selled plastic window reconditioning kits...they work pretty good too

if you ever wanted to replace it straight up, i'd look for some sort of upholsterly place that fixes boat covers and other marina gear, they usually have sheets of that window stuff lying around and the sewing machine that can take it

buy some buffing compound made for plastic. I totally forget what it was called, but I used some kind of glass polish on a Miatas' rear window and it cleared it up nicely.

Just replace the entire window. You simply unzip and rezip.

I used to have a convertible ('93 240SX SE LE) and couldn't find any way to clean it. The "dirt" is probably scratches and the only thing to do is to replace it. I had to replace the entire top, but it was so nice to be able to see out the rear window again.

AFAIK - the early windows didn't unzip.

Meguires 15 Plastic Polish does a nice job. It's a bit more agressive than the polish BMW sells in the convertible top care kit. I used #15 on my window and followed it with the BMW polish. It it completely clear now except for the two fold marks in the lower corners.

If the top has really degraded and it went beyond scratching and normal fogging with a surface layer of oxidized plastic, and IF you are ready to replace it if you can't fix it - then there is one other thing to try.... Goof-Off. I've used with success on the same sort of plastic, it clears the plastic and softens it by dissolving the surface of the plastic.

BMW uses the same sort of plastic, a bit thinner, on the map-window of their motorcycle tank bags. I've restored about 4 of them so far using Goof-Off. I use a clean rag that is damp with goof-off. It is important that the plastic be completely CLEAN before trying this since any dirt on the plastic will be embedded in it by the melting action of the Goof-Off. I take long swipes at the plastic with the cloth, not stopping and just picking it up at the end of the swipe.

WARNING - you may completely fook up your window using Goof-Off on it, so you do this at your own risk. As usual - try in a small area first. I also suggest you do this outside with adequate ventilation - Goof-Off has some nasty stuff in it you don't want to breathe.

Let us know if it works for you. My window looks fine so I haven't tried it, but if it works it may save quite a few people a considerable amount of money.

wet sand your plastic window with like 2000 grit sandpaper and it will get rid of the yellowish look and then buff it out with rubbing compound. thats how you defog plastic headlights that turn yellowish.
