Did this happen to anyone else?

Getting on the highway the yesterday shifting from 4th-5th in my 95 M3 the shifter disconnected from the transmision and it got stuck in fourth gear. Is this a common problem with 3 series trans?

this happend to a friend of mine with a 325, the shifter linkage came appart when he was shifting to hard.
