I hope you know that the s62 engine is 15 grand without the transmission. It can be found at http://www.bavengine.com/engine.html
You will have to call them because they dont have it listed on the actual web page

www.bimmerworld.com If they dont have one I think I know someone who might be interested in selling his. Good luck. You're headed into uncharted territory.

I would find a wrecked M5 with a good drivetrain. The misc parts may help you later.

Yea you can fit it in there was a company in europe that did this but it was expensive especially b/c you had to ship your car overseas. I haven't heard of too many people in the US doing it though.

Also try www.car-part.com and search the various years that the M5 was produced, 2000-2003.

I remember back when I first fell in love with BMW's, I always thought why doesn't somebody just put an M5 engine in a 3 series. And sure enough somebody did, I'm about 95% sure somebody did it in Car and Driver back about 5-6 years ago. Might check there for some info.

Then it would have been a 6cyl motor.

Yep, would've been the E34 M5's S38 powerplant. The E39 M5 was introduced in 2000 ('99 in Europe, if I recall correctly).
It's possible that Hartge (hart-guh) has done it before, as they list a swap that sounds like it incorporates the S62 on their site: http://hartge.de/html/e36m3uk.html. I have never seen an E36 with this swap performed before, though.

it may be new, but what a car it would be when/if he gets the swap done.

I think Hartge has only put the 4.0L V8 into an E36.

I have done way to much reading and what i have found is that Alpina made a model several years ago.....it was the B8 and it carried a bored and stroked 540i motor in it and made 333hp and way too much torque. there was a good article on one in BMW CAR and it was was acually a e36 touring. There was also a company in australia that put the 4.0 liter in an e26 318is. i think the biggest issue will be finding a motor and programming the ecu. Thanks for the help and keep it coming if you find anyhting out. thank you
