how much money do you have....? if its a ton then yes...custom motor mounts, transmount, various fabrication, wiring harness', custom exhaust, and probably leaving out more but it would probably be more cost effective to drop an LS2 in it. <---- IM gonna be killed for saying this

WHAT?! j/k. You're right. You're talking about $25k to do this swap. It has been done though. Had the headers coming through the headlights.

I recently read a thread from a guy who bought all the surplus parts from PTG (since theyre done with BMW) and I believe a slightly used motor could be had for 15-18k...IIRC

otherwise an ls1 could be had for 2-4k and a new ls2 (your 400hp mark) could be had for 5-6k

E30 M3 is about 2900 full trim, gas etc. The M5 engine is actually lighter than the S50/2/4 M engines. plus, it mounts further back.

the fact that it mounts further back is key!...I still say Ls1...but I cant say ive seen an M5 V8 in an E30...so start saving....what about a transmission??

the engine of the e34 ///M5 should sit flush on an e30. the v8 and v10 variants are just crazy big for the e30

google it. the V8 M5 has already been done. It shorter than a inline 6, custom exhausts are the biggest neccesity/ expense. besides labor and the engine itself. Tranny options are probably the 5 speed out of the E34 530 V8 and $$$ custom.

E30 M3 has a 50/50 weight distribution with 4 Cyl motor which makes it ideal for cornering, and that is why one of the factors why it's so popular, if you on the other hand will put the e39 motor in ther you will have to add weight to the trunk and it has to match the front. Plus e39 motor will require different differential, suspension, brakes, computers, speedo, it will all look ugly if done incorectly. Please think it all through, and calculate all the parts you would need to buy.

I think you'll find the weight difference isn't all that much, and it will be further offset by the e39 m5 engine sitting further back. As stated above, the e39 m5 engine is lighter than the s50/52 engines which are often put into e30s with little balance issues
