| Ive had my Alpine White 1986 325e as my first car (at 17, Im 21 now) and lemme tell you, these M20s (engine code for E30 I6s) are bullet proof. Mine has 192,000 miles and still no rough idle and starts every time and smooth power delivery. Granted it probably has lost LOTS of HP and compresion along the way with all the mods I have on it and the miles it has, but its still troopiong along.
I also have a `90 ///M3 and that car leaves you speechless. Especially cuz of the mods it has. I think the E30 is a great beginning car and as you go along in your skill, you can modify it accordingly. They last forever, and have a fair share of power and are quite nimble stock. Not too luxurious and not too E21-ish (no offense), still not THAT out dated in terms of looks. I say go for it, and make sure its in good working condition.
