derek,
do you have any weight figures for the ls6 vs the stock s14? I know you said the added weight isnt too much, but perhaps using a transaxle type setup, while difficult to install, would be worth it in the name of weight distribution.....

I would personally love a 400whp e30 M3, especially if it had 50/50 weight distribution, no matter what the valve cover said.

I really do wish I had exact weight figures, but there seems to be so much different information out there. It also depends on where the weight is located on the engine, engine dimensions, peripherals, etc... I am going to get the thing in, get all the fluids in there and then get corner weights on the thing, and adjust accordingly.

I had given the transaxle some consideration, but I just don't know that I am up for that level of fabrication. If the BMW 6 cyl diff turns out not to be strong enough, maybe it is worth looking at then, as fabrication would be required anyway.

I think with moving some items around, using a composite hood and possibly fenders, the weight dist should end up favorable. It is just too soon to tell and it is not worth getting too concerned about until the engine is in and everything is placed. Mind you, all of the positioning of items which can be moved around will be toward the back and as low as possible.

einhander: I just saw your post on the guy looking at putting a Nissan engine in his car and something to the effect that some people shouldn't own BMWs. I love them, but they are just cars, that aren't rare at all. Shoot, when I lived in Chicago, it seemed there were more BMWs than Chevys on the road. Now if someone said they were going to bastardize a 507 or an M1, I would be the first person in line to volunteer for their firing squad.

Just take the attitude "I wouldn't do it to my car, but whatever, to each his own." If nothing else, it will give you something to shake your head about and give you a good chuckle.

All badges and brands aside, that thing's going to haul, no question. And that alone is ample justification for me. Don't forget that many of the parts in BMW's are actually manufactured by the big 3. (Btw, is Daimler Chrysler still a big 3?)

I was commenting that the car is just nasty (in a good way).

Oh I totally agree with you. I'm just one of the purists. I can respect the work you're doing and the speed of the final product. I just like to shake things up a little. No hard feelings.

That's cool. I guess I am really more into the speed of things. If I had more cash to sink into my project, all of this work would be going into a '76 Porsche 912. Again, the weak little sister of no real value, but all the lines of the beast. LS1 in a light little car, rear weight distribution, 993 suspension, GT3 flares and wing. MMMmmmmmm.......

I've never heard that before. What parts do they manufacture for BMW?

That's bullcrap.. all mechanicals, engine, tranny, diffs, suspension, brakes, all the major components and systems are bmw. And if you even have to ask if Chrysler is still in the proverbial "big 3" then you obviously have some research to do as it is..

I mean, it is a chevy V8.. i know E30 M3's aren't that rare, but doing a motor from a different marque in an M car- THE M car, the E30 M3, is not something i would ever consider. But screw what i think, more power to him (if he needs it haha) that Z06 motor will romp!

That's what I thought, he must be smokin crack. I know BMW doesn't make everything on their cars, but why would they have American car companies make stuff for them?

well, by technicality, he's kind of right. the mini 1.6 is built by tritec, as a joint venture between bmw and chrysler. but i doubt thats what he is talking about...

Thought BMW used Chrysler engines in the new MINI?

Just like to say that I think the 5.7 engine is a great idea.

If you`re honest, you will admit that the E30 M3 isn`t a particularly quick car.

This way, you get the best of both worlds.

The best looking car out there, with the punch to back the looks up

It's all about having fun people. Screw the purists. I wouldn't do it myself, but then again I hope I never see him at a stoplight.

Me and my turbo would just limp away quietly.
