325 Temp Gauge Always Reads TO THE MAX

on my 1987 325 2.7l, the temp gauge ALWAYS reads HOT, I turn on the car and the needle instantly goes to RED, and obviously it isn't actually hot, so what sensor do i have to replace/ where is it, or is not even the sensor at all thanks, mike
