Shifter links

My stick shift in my 87 325e is loose and wobbly.I was told i prolly had to change the shifter links.Would the shift links need to be replaced or would i need to fix the whole shift setup? what parts would i need to fix this problem.I was also thinking of getting the z shifter and installing it while im fixing the problem. plz and thank for the input
