The m50 came on the later e36, and is pretty much 100% supirior ot the m20. Basically its newer technology.

it says on that website i told you that if your looking to turbo one of those go the m50 because its got thicker cylinder walls i think, and you want to twin turbo it lol good luck with that! sounds like one hell of a project

Where are you located and how much money do you want to spend...
BTWm that circle earth crap is just that... crap.. get some stereo power cables and make yourself the same thing for a fraction of the cost.

the e36 tranny that comes with the engine should fit right in...

Well no, the M50 is not the best. If you have no budget go for the S50 or S52, the engines from the e36 M3. Then turbo that and rape everything in sight.

Go for the S50 if you can get one. Id say they are a little cheaper to modify than a s52 just because of obd II but you can also fix that. Personally I am bias towards the M20. The M20 has a lot of potential like a 3.1 liter stroker which eats e36 m3s. But the down fall is that is one of the few timing belt driven motor s which bmw has produced. I was contemplating the s50 swap for a while. I PERSONALLY believe the s50 is a better built motor over the s52.

I stuck an M30 in my car and was instantly happy. And it loves turbos as well.... Or, do what I just did and go buy an M106.

The ideal swap is an S50/2. Preferably a '95 to stay with an OBD1 engine management. If not, the M50 will still kick you in your ass. Its got more power, plus dual cams. A very reliable and legendary smooth inline 6 that performed many many duties and was applied to many models throughout a long tenure. M20 is good and bulletproof, but its just harder to juice power out of it.

if you happen to have an m50 allready like i did i stroked it with a 2.8 kit from zionsville autosport its only $499 then you can stick that in your car and later on buy a schrick cam kit that comes with injectors and software, plus the m50s have better heads the m52 and are allready obd1 so then you should be push 50+ "aslong as you open up your engine at both ends" i plan on puting it in my ix

M50 has ease of many bolt ons, much more aftermarket life, and has proven itself by making alot of power. Having owned an M20, it was a fun motor. BUT... It isnt that easy to get non-turbo power from it.
I did the following:
Dinan ECU
K&N filter, and airbox mod. Have a thread in this section about it
Catless exhaust
Gave much more power, and also revved much easier and higher. It sure made the car more enjoyable.
