Super ETA "I" Stroker on the works Hello Everyone:
I started the tear down on my engine (1987 325is) due to a bad head bolt and found there were no inner springs on the head, so I looked closer at the cam and realized it was an "E" cam, lo and behold it seemed someone changed the engine in my car at some time point to a Super ETA, The head says 2.5/2.7 and the block production date is of 04/ 07/ 88. I took the numbers from the block as well: 1-289-575, also there are some other tags that say 325-E TUS71 and 1588 AO6-9 I hope someone can shed some light as to this particular block and head combo, sure it seems like a regular Super ETA BUT.... the intake runners on this head are LARGE, they are in fact from the factory with no signs of porting but match perfectly the large intakes from the 325 "I" intake that was on the car, all electronics are from the "is" and there were never any issues while revving other than a bad head bolt on the head (the failed head bolt was not even the same thread!!). From what I have been told, the intake runners on the Super ETA were small, but these are large from the factory... Did I just win the BMW Gene pool lotto?, Any info will be apreciated, Tomorrow I will try and ascertain exactly what this is from BMW but I already have the 272 cam and will be getting the dual springs to match, all will be well doccumented, photographed and (yes of course I will tap the remaining oil holes for the 272 cam) will keep everyone posted, this development seems pretty interesting to me and hope this info will help others. OH!! by the way the valves are LARGE "i" valves as well... anyhow thanks for your time and info should anyone have some. Update, the original head was cracked, hence we'll be placing an "i" head on the Super "ETA" bottom end with the special pistons it came with, 272 cam, new double "is" springs, new exhaust valves (have two sets of intake valves to choose from), new everything else on the head with a 3 angle valve job, will also bore, port match and shave it, intake is already flowed, 535 AFM, 19# injectors & Chip, K&N etc. Will keep posted if anyone interested, pics at myspace, happy trails.
