fuel pump

hi guys i need abit of help here. car is a 318 84 model. and it has the standard lift pump in the tank next to it the level sender obviously and then it has the external pump. is it possible to get hold of a later model fuel tank and have just one intank pump at all? i need to upgrade the fuel pump so im lookin at the best way of doing it. or can i just run the standard lift pump with say a bosch 044
