Smile What exactly is Glasspack? Is it too rice for an E30?

I'd like to know what they are, what their advantages are, how much they are, etc. and if they're too rice for my 90 325is. TIA

A glasspack is a tube with holes in it surrounded by fiberglass and then it's all encased in another tube. Their advantage is that they provide basically an open pipe, reduced backpressure, they're inexpensive, and very small (ie. easy to fit).

This is a glasspack

As for if they are rice, I'd say no. They're more Indiana pickup truck with dual exhaust.

Here's a little something from Summit Racing
Dynamax
3 1/2 in. round body, 15 1/4 in. body length, 24 3/4 in. overall length, 2 in. inlet/outlet, glasspack muffler... $14.50

3 1/2 in. round body, 15 1/4 in. body length, 24 1/4 in. overall length, 2 1/4 in. inlet/outlet, glasspack muf... $14.50

3 1/2 in. round body, 18 1/4 in. body length, 27 3/4 in. overall length, 2 in. inlet/outlet, glasspack muffler... $14.50

Flowtech
Muffler ``Purple Hornies`` Glasspack 2.25`` Inlet/Outlet Slip-Fit 24`` $21.95

I'd be a little more inclined to put them on an e30 than an e36.

Yeah, I wouldn't call them rice at all...When I hear glasspack, I think of a Camaro Z28 with an exhaust, or those pickups with dual exhaust. I have no idea what they would sound like on a BMW, though. I think someone put one on their A4 1.8T on audiworld.com, but that was a long time ago.

would something like that fit an E36???

is it loud? how loud is it compared to straightpipes? is there HP loss with glasspacks? straightpipes? any noticeable gas efficiency loss with either of these? glasspacks seem cheaper, but what do you guys reccomend? i want something to make my car much louder, but not so loud i will get tired of driving my car...thanx alot, hope to hear from you soon...

oh yeah, by the way, i have an E36, so would it sound different from an E30?

ummmmm... lets see, they sound like shit, pop, crackle, and once you are just about tired of listening to that racket, they rust through and you get that racket + an exhaust leak noise.

NO!!!

DON'T put those glasspacks on. they look free-flow, but the little louver thingies that stick up disrupt airflow, and the resulting turbulence actually increases backpressure. To make power you need to minimize backpressure but incerase exhaust stream velocity. Before you buy a muffler, look down it and make sure there's nothing sticking up into the exhaust stream, make sure its the kind you can see straight through. Those actually make power. I left the resonator on my custom setup, its loud when you punch it but pretty quiet other times. You could take out the reonator and it would be pretty loud. Besides above 4000 all you hear is intake anyway. Oh and Sport Compact Car had an article on this stuff in their NOV. 2K1 issue....hope this helps...

do you guys have any numbers to back up the decrease in hp?

I personally have seen number where a well setup glass pack type of exhaust, 2 of them actually, flowed just slightly less than an open pipe. Not on a bmw, an english 4 cylinder. But the engine doesn't matter on the flow bench.

okay, but what's the point in having a muffler then? I'd say that a glass pack or turbo (no not like a turbocharger) type muffler will flow the best. A turbo type would be best for any bmw application.

The glasspacks will be loud, they will crackle, and they will fall apart faster than a well built exhaust like the factory one or most aftermarket ones.

If you're looking for a cheap, very raw exhaust, then go for the glasspack. If not, stay away.

Yeah, they totally sound like crap, that's why you don't see many BMW people with them, but a lot of friggin crappy cars with them.
