Ok boys, I need some advice. I have a 1987 325ic sitting quite low....this fall i hit something that tore off the front plastic undertray that covers belts and pulleys ammoung other things. Here in CT it has recently become very cold and i noticed that my engine temp gauge stays in the blue while driving at any speed. When at a stop or standstill the temp comes up and if left alone long enugh the cooling fan comes on as expected. My car is equipped with the factory oil cooler. So my question is this.....would the temp drop due to the missing plastic undertray? Could all that air flow under there really be cooling things down that much? Any help or ideas are welcome.....and I do mean ANY! Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't think it would effect the engine temp. All the cooling comes from air through the radiator, should be the same with or without the stone tray.

Yeha the air might be hitting the oil pan further cooling the oil but it shoudl not cool it that much. I mean you could find the tray at a junk yard or even get a new one and see whats up with the temp after that.

That skid plate does nothing other than preventing damage to the car, and it served its purpose.

thermostat i bet. I replaced the thermostat on my m42 and the temp went back to normal

i had the same problem with my 323i, but i didnt tear off the under tray ^_^

i replaced my fan clutch, and voila fixed!

i never had that splas/rock guard. my temp was normal. should be the thermostat.
