E30 Chrome Window Trim Painting...Advice Needed!

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had painted the chrome trim around the windows of a 2 door 325is?

What prep work was involved and what all did you do before painting?

What type of paint did you use and what type of clear coat did you use?

Advice needed....

use some SEM trim paint. dont use any duplicolor shit. take off that little piece near the back that clips the 2 pieces together, then pull the whole thing off carefully. sand down with 200 grit, paint with some SEM trim paint, reverse the process.

Or you could find trim off a 318is...the only non M3 E30 to come with black window trim. I found mine at a junk yard got it for 60 bucks. If you go this route tho...make sure you get the rear windows out of the junk car you got the trim from. If you do decided to paint them, there is a Tech artical about taking them off on www.e30sport.net ....check it out

I did this twice. Once w/o sanding, and once with. Lemme tell you that you need to sand it. Then you need to get some "Dupli-Color Bumper/Trim paint". You spray many coats of that, and you wait. Of course masking it off is the most PITA part, unless you can take the moldings off, which I have seen done. Good luck and email me for more info if needed.

From the mouth of someone that really knows what they are talking about here.

Pick up 2 cans of SEM Black Trim Paint.
Pick up several sheets of 3M Very Fine scuff pads.

Scuff all the trim, with the pads, for the love of god dont use sandpaper.... scuff pads do such a better job. then spray on 1 very thin coat of SEM paint, and let it completely dry. When i say thin, i mean that the chrome can still be seen easily, this coat is meant as a dusting or sorts. Now go ahead and spray 2-3 more normal coats till everything is black.

SEM paints are intended for this purpose! they are chemically formulated to bond directly with bare metals.

Ive used the duplicolor trim paint Mariano, cant say i was impressed with its adheasion.

body shop 80 bucks for me, had it done body color. Somehow it ended up being free ( i was getting other stuff done) and he never charged me

car is diamondshwarz(sp) otherwise i would have done it flat black
