Thumbs down Squeaking and vibrating of rear deck against rear windshield w/ sub hits!?

Ive pretty much got a lot of the other rattling under control in the trunk, but the rear deck I cant seem to stop from making tons of noise when the rear seats are folded up. I already stuffed the bottom of it with t-shirts to stop it from vibrating up and down, making that loud banging noise. That still didnt stop it from vibrating against the rear windshield and making another noise, plus some kind of squeaking noise whenever the bass hits. I tried putting paper towels in the crack between the glass and the rear deck around the hump for the 3rd brakelight and about 6 inches to either side of the hump, and the sounds didnt really change. What can I do to remedy this? Its making the bass sound really shitty!

Your problem... my problem

I have the same problem with my E36... I'm guessing your runnin a lot of power. My approach is going to first make sure that the center air vent cover is solid, by making a rubber seal for it. Then I am going to put rubber strips between the rear deck cover and windsheild. If that doesn't work, I will probably cut a sizable port in the rear deck as the decrease the pressure in the trunk and increase sound in the cabin. If all else fails, I may try, bear with me, Dynamat (which is extremely overpriced). I will tell you how it goes.

hmm yeah i have the same problem, and i tried the old "stuff it full of cloth" trick to no avail. I pulled off the deck and I re-glued the stock dampening material, and im going to get some spray on dampening and put on a bunch of coats. if that doesnt work, then ill try sealing over the holes.

ok, ive figured it out guys, to get rid of that annoying rear deck vibration problem, cover up the holes to the trunk.

This weekend i just got really pissed about it, and decided to take it out and see what i could do. I tried the cotton stuffing trick. didnt work. so i practically took the entire back half of my car apart. I pulled off the rear deck and noticed some stock dampening material and reglued it with silicon glue. then after this i went to problem solving.

The vents underneath the rear deck are the problem. So... I had some steel sheet metal (pretty stiff, but bendable with pliers) lying around and decided to cut out some pieces to fit over the holes. I had metal cutting scissors (courtesy of lowe's for $15) and measured and cut. Then, to get a flush seal, I bent a little bit of the bottom to make a lip and same with the top. then i put two holes in each piece, and got some bolts and made a metal piece for the otherside to clamp down on. between each piece, I put some thin carpet to dampen it in case it decided to rattle. tighten it down, and viola. PS youll need an extra set of hands to hold the top piece while youre tightening underneath.

It works like a charm. Now i can only feel the vibrations, but no rattling.

dynamat way overpriced? puuuhhhleeeeaassseee! Have you ever used the stuff before? The stuff works exceptionally well every time I have used it, it serves its purpose and does the job when used right..In your case though you seemed to come out good. We had a customer a while back who had a 57 Studebaker who complained of alot of road noise and his trunk rattled some from his small system he had. Well, we ended up talking him into a $1200 dynamat sale(including labor) and we did the WHOLE car, and when i say whole i mean the whole thing...Every square inch possible of bare metal in the trunk, the interior which was stripped out, doors, firewall, under the hood and when we were done he was thrilled. Not only did it make a huge difference in his road noise, but it enhanced the sound of his music so much it sounded like a different system when done. Now I'm not saying go out and spend 1200 like he did, but to fix your problem had what you done not fixed it, a simple wedge pack would have fixed the problem and cost approx 25-30(retail), and you probably would have had some left to use somewhere else...

yes, well some of us arent quite as rich as the others out there.

but i agree with you, dynamat is nice, but the spray ons are nicer i believe. it gets into all the nooks and crannies, and if you know how to use it, getting into the nooks an crannies is a good thing

Good to hear that you solved the rattling problem. My 1200watt 15" Solobaric is annoying the shit out of me too and i def wanna do something about it now that i have some time on my hands. Is it possibble to take some pictures of what you did so that we can get a clearer idea of what you did? Can't wait till i hear only the sub and not the rear deck vibs .
