Radio problem

I have a small problem, I just bought a '89 325I and it originally had a stock head unit installed in it which worked great, but while I was at the shop I bought the car at I saw a Sony CDX-4000X unit sitting amongst some stuff they had lying their. So I asked the shop owner how much he wanted for it, he said $25.00, I said yeehaa. Anyway, I got them to install it for me... that went fine.

The problem I have is that, if I program a radio channel into the unit and then turn off my car... within 60 seconds the radios memory gets wiped, cause next time I turn on the car it's back to defaults.. clock reset, channels gone, settings are gone. Also if I turn the key to the ON position the radio work all the time, but when I START the vehicle it randomly works. I have no blown fuses, including the one on the back of the head unit.

Any ideas? I don't want to spend $50.00 for Hifi buys or circuit city to do it.

Easy,

They hooked the red and yellow wires to the same power unit (thus when the car is off it has no power). You need to hook the red and yellow wires to different power units. Thus meaning that is still has power when the car is off for the mem function of it.

any thoughts on which other continuous power line to use?? what color would it be??

It should look like this:

*FIRST COLOR COMBO = new headunit
*SECOND COLOR COMBO = factory wiring

red - 1/2 light purple 1/2 gray
yellow - red with green stripe
black - brown

thanks alot, I will give that a try in a little bit. Do you think this will solve the problem about it working all the time in the ON postion while it works randomly when the vehicle is started?
